There are some basic things that you need to have or to know in order to make your every day life smooth and trouble free. One of the key words is the CPR number.
CPR CPR CPR! The CPR number is your social security number, and it is the key to practically everything – even borrowing books and opening a bank account. After you have been granted a residence permit, you can apply for a CPR number. This is done at Folkeregistret (the National Registry Office), and it takes about 1-4 weeks to process your application.
The University offers introduction courses for international students. They are titled Denmark Today / Destination Denmark and have a duration of 3 ½ weeks. The courses are a great way of being introduced to Aarhus and Danish way of life as well as learning to speak a bit of Danish. Most importantly, it is a great way of meeting people at a crucial time of your stay, when you really need a network of people to help you get settled in a new city.
• To apply for your CPR number, and to enquire about other local authority-related issues, go to Borgerservice (‘citizen service’) at the City Hall (the entrance by the tower). The City Hall is situated on Park Allé, 8000 Århus C.
